GN Hear & Now

Did you know that Tinnitus is one of the most common Neurological symptoms? Such famous faces as Gerade Butler, Ludwig van Beethoven and Charles Darwin suffered from tinnitus. Charles Darwin, even kept a journal on his experiences with tinnitus.

As clinicians, we are all aware of the debilitating impact that tinnitus has on an individual’s emotional, physical and overall mental well-being.  Tinnitus can affect each and every individual differently and there are many different treatment options out there. However, one size does not always fit all.
Here at ReSound, we have identified the importance of breaking the vicious cycle of tinnitus and finding a tinnitus solution to suit each individual’s needs and lifestyle. This is why we have develop two tinnitus solutions into our current product range, the ReSound Relief app and the Tinnitus Sound Generator.

The Tinnitus Relief app uses a combination of sound therapy and relaxation exercises that aim to distract the brain from focusing on the tinnitus.

The app is designed to be auditory, visual and tactile. The user has access to sound therapy, through our various ‘Soundscapes’ which are a series of different relaxing tones, such as, woods, at the beach and afternoon. These sounds can be streamed directly to the hearing aids though direct connection with the iPhone with our LiNX2 product, direct streaming using Unite Phone Clip + and/or as simple as plugging in a set headphones.

The app also features guided relaxation exercises, to reduce anxiety and stressed caused by tinnitus. It's designed to be multi-sensory, so you can even sit back, relax and pop the bubbles! This app is free to download from the App store or Google play. My recommendation is to download it onto your phone and experience the great benefits yourself. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

In ReSound Aventa 3.9 software you will now have access to the TSG function across all of our current product range. It can be accessed in all of our custom, BTE and RIE styles from the Enya 2 upwards.
This function is designed to help with the acclimatisation of tinnitus. The TSG can be set up with or without the hearing aid microphone running in the background. You have access to several sound presets, such as, white noise, pink noise, speech noise and high frequency noise.

In our Linx2 range we introduced the 6 nature sounds, which include ocean, breaking waves, calming waves, beach surf, shoreline and water creek.
All of the nature sounds are a broadband signal that vary in frequency and amplitude. This allows you to find the most appropriate TSG setting for you patients need.
Set the TSG volume
The volume of the TSG is set using the volume slider. The volume should be set to a level that provides relief, but does not completely mask the tinnitus.
Below is a suggestion on how to first fit the TSG. It uses the threshold of audibility as a starting point.

Find the TSG threshold of audibility (three steps)
  • • Using the volume slider, turn up the volume until the patient reports that they can just barely hear the TSG white noise. This is the TSG threshold of audibility.
  • • Increase the volume slider until the patient reports they can no longer hear their tinnitus over the TSG sound. This is the level at which their tinnitus is completely masked. This is the minimum masking level (MML).
  • • Set the volume 5–10 dB above the threshold level. (You can go higher than 10 dB if necessary, but do not completely mask the tinnitus signal. This is where the MML is important.)
Here at ReSound we are happy to say that we can now offer a full Tinnitus solution, we highly recommend downloading the app and having a play for yourself.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!
